Last week Danner added an $8.6-million order to its to-do list. No small task, the Portland-based company said it expects to deliver the boots within the next 90 days.

So, what did the U.S. Army order?

An undisclosed amount of Danner Combat Hiker boots. This boot has inspired a recent crop of mountain combat boots competing for the Army’s affection. While this contract isn’t the final say in the decision between Belleville, Danner and Wellco, it could be a preview of things to come.

Along with the hefty order, which is to be delivered to soldiers in Afghanistan, Danner is hard at work filling up its new 59,000-square-foot factory with workers and boots. According to Portland’s News Channel 8, it takes craftsmen from 27 countries, two shifts, six days a week to make a Danner boot. And with this new contract, it appears they’ve got their work cut out for them.

“In recent years, we’ve been working closely with the U.S. Army to develop and provide footwear for extended wear and high performance in harsh mountain terrain and challenging weather conditions,” said Joseph P. Schneider, president and CEO of LaCrosse Footwear, in a prepared statement.

“We remain focused on combining our deep understanding of what soldiers need with our expertise in innovative product engineering, unique manufacturing capabilities and a passion for our craft. We are proud to support the men and women who serve our country,” he added.
